Understanding Zakah

Zakah is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a religious duty which purifies our wealth and ensures that a portion of it is distributed amongst those in need.

Zakah is an obligation upon any adult Muslim who is sane and has had more than the minimum required amount of wealth (Nisaab) for one year.

Nisaab Threshold

The value of Nisaab is 87.48 grams of pure gold or 612.36 grams of pure silver. The minimum threshold for Zakah (value of Nisaab) will vary according to current market prices. It requires giving a calculated amount (at 2.5% of your wealth) to the poor and needy.

If you have equal to or more than the Nisaab then you are eligible for Zakah.
